New Zealand Apprenticeships for outdoor instructors and educators!

Skills Active and NZOIA are working in partnership to make New Zealand Apprenticeships available to the professional outdoor community – recognising training and assessment carried out towards NZOIA qualifications. These can be existing NZOIA qualifications that you want to be recognised as part of a National Qualification or NZOIA qualifications that you plan to sit within the next two years.

Sign a training agreement with Skills Active by 28 October 2014 and you will be eligible to apply for a reboot grant of $1,000 for yourself and $1,000 for your employer.  This subsidy can contribute to your training and assessment fees that assist you to achieve the NZQA Framework Qualifications.

All you have to do to get this ball rolling is to enrol in a training agreement with Skills Active at a cost of $125 plus GST and complete a re-boot subsidy form by the 28 October 2014.  Forms can be requested from NZOIA at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or download using the links below. Once that is underway you have two years to sit your NZOIA qualifications or RCC (Recognition of Current Competency) your existing NZOIA qualifications and complete a few extra assignments to meet the requirements for the National Certificate.

This joint venture with Skills Active and NZOIA is an opportunity not to be missed.  You and your employer receives professional development funding and you gain a National Qualification along with your NZOIA Qualifications.

Apprentice Re-Boot Initiative - Information Sheet

    Tips for completing the documentation:

    Before you start...

    1. Check out the NZOIA and Skills Active Apprenticeship Pathway document and decide which Apprenticeship you are going for:

    - NZ Apprenticeship in Outdoor Recreation Instruction (i.e. 1 x NZOIA Leader and 1 x NZOIA Level 1 + Skills Active Requirements)
    - NZ Apprenticeship in Outdoor Recreation Multi-Activity Instructor (i.e. 2 x NZOIA Leader Awards and 1 x NZOIA Level 1 + Skills Active Requirements)

(NB: 1. The NZOIA Level 1 can be in the same discipline as one of the NZOIA Leader Awards)

    2. Get together:

    - Your National Student Number (contact NZQA if you don't know it)
    - A copy of your passport or birth certificate
    - Proof of your personal bank account number
    - Proof of your employers/organisations bank account number

    3. Print out:

    - Skills Active Training Agreement
    - Apprentice Re-Boot - Application for Payment

    4. Have open or print out:

    - NZOIA and Skills Active Apprenticeship Pathway
    - Apprenticeship Re-Boot Initiative Information Sheet

    Completing the documentation...

Most of the detail should be reasonably straightforward, but here are a couple of points to make it easier for you:

    - The Programme of Study is the 'NZ Apprenticeship in Outdoor Recreation Instruction' OR 'NZ Apprenticeship in Outdoor Recreation Multi-Activity Instructor'
    - Q5 on the Skills Active Training Agreement says that a Training Plan will need to be attached to the agreement. In this case, submit the Agreement first and  a Learning Support Advisor (LSA) will contact you in due course.
    - The TEC Apprentice Re-Boot application sheet says that the apprentice and employer should not apply for funding until 90 days of training have passed. We have had verfication that it is ok to submit this Re-Boot Application for payment form with your Skills Active Training Agreement. Skills Active will then manage the payment process once the 90 days of training have passed.
