Save $100!
Training & Assessment Combo Package

Yes that's right, we have extended this offer for another year! On completion of a NZOIA training course you will be given a $100 voucher to be used against the cost of a future assessment in the same discipline.  We want to encourage members to attend a pre-assessment training course prior to an assessment.  Why?  Because we believe that....

- pre-assessment training leads to a better assessment experience for the candidates and the assessor

- pre-assessment training will lead to a higher quality instructor in the field

- pre-assessment training will improve the pass rate on assessments

This offer ends on the 30 June 2018.  You will need to use your assessment voucher within 12 months of attending your training course.

So if you are considering an assessment in the future, team it up with a pre-assessment training event.  There should be one in the same island 3 - 6 months prior to your assessment.  The 2018 calendar is due out by the end of June 2017.

Free Range Refreshers

Free Range Refreshers are offered for all NZOIA qualifications where revalidation is required.

A Free Range Refresher is when the candidate/s liaise directly with a NZOIA Assessor. The candidate negotiates the fee (usually $375 plus/day and travel expenses), time and location with the assessor.  This provides the candidate with flexibility to have a Refresher at a convenient time and place.  It can significantly reduce the costs of the candidate travelling to an NZOIA calendared course.

What is the difference between a Refresher Workshop and an Assessor Sign-Off?

- The concept behind the Refresher Workshop is to get a group of people together from a variety of work environments to demonstrate their skills and share their ideas.  In this way we can ensure they are current and there is professional development occurring as they learn tips and tricks from each other.  Refresher Workshops must be attended every second revalidation cycle (i.e. every six years for most qualifications).

- An Assessor sign-off can be on a one to one basis and can occur in the work place or during a shared recreational event.  It is an informal check by an assessor that the qualification holder is working at the current standard.  There may or may not be a payment negotiated with the assessor.

The Technical Sub Committee sees the benefit of assessors being able to run Free Range Refresher Workshops as well as Assessor sign-offs.  This provides more opportunity for members to complete their revalidation requirements and can bring the cost down if there are enough attendees.

To make it a Refresher Workshop there needs to be a minimum of three people attending, and they must be from at least two different workplaces.

There are still administrative and assessor pool costs to NZOIA which will need to be meet.  Each member will need to pay a $50 fee to NZOIA as well as the fee negotiated with the assessor.

The Process:

- Get some people together (there needs to be a minimum of three people attending, and they must be from at least two different workplaces for Refresher Workshop).

- Decide on some dates, have a couple of back-up options in case that doesn’t work for the assessor. Keep in mind that NZOIA needs at least one month notice that a Refresher Workshop is taking place.

- Contact an Assessor to negotiate date, location and fee. Ask whether they will include the $50 NZOIA candidate fee in their fees or whether they want you to pay it separately to NZOIA.

- Tell NZOIA: Assessor, candidates, date, location (the assessor can complete this part for you, just make sure they know that they are doing it!).

- Pre-requisites: You will need to upload a current first aid certificate on to your NZOIA profile. The Assessor will need to view your log book.

- Attend the workshop (Yay)

- Reporting: The Assessor will complete the reporting requirements and then NZOIA will process the results.

Professional Development Workshops at the Symposium

NZOIA is looking for people to facilitate Professional Development Workshops for 2018 Symposium...

Are you attending the Symposium this year and interested in running a Professional Development Workshop? This is a great opportunity to give back to your industry and share something that you are passionate about. Workshops should have a practical element, or be aimed at how to incorporate the theory in practice. They can be 3 hours to a full day, and can be held on or offsite. Half-day workshops are very popular as people love to sample a variety of training/professional development opportunities. You can even run more than one of the same workshop if you like!

Adaptive Outdoor Education

Keen to present a workshop but not sure what to focus on?

Here are some ideas from our members to help trigger those creative brainwaves...

- Facilitation skills in the Outdoors

- Weather - NZ weather systems and cool stuff

- Rope/Cliff Rescue

- Navigation skills in the bush

- Outdoor Education in schools

- There has been real success with some bushcraft based workshops that focus on firelighting, knifework & crafting with natural materials.  We want more!

- NZOIA Assessors - what about running some pre-assessment training on some specific aspect of the syllabus that you would like to see performed better on assessments? - Kayaking Skills or Rock 2 training?

Great reasons for running a professional development workshop:

Camp Cooking Workshop- An opportunity to share something that you are passionate about

- Presenting a workshop can be also be used to revalidate your qualification (i.e. if your Bush qual needs revalidating and you present a ‘Bush’ related workshop. Talk to NZOIA for details)

- An opportunity to present a new way of doing things/a new philosophy

- An opportunity to promote an activity

- A fantastic way of meeting people who are interested in the same things you are

- MOU organisations – this is a great way to contribute to NZOIA as part of the NZOIA/MOU agreement.

- Exposure for your company/organisation/place of work

In an effort to keep the NZOIA Training Symposium a low cost event for participants, Professional Development Workshop Facilitators volunteer their time to run the workshops (i.e. they do not receive a monetary payment) and will still need to register and pay for the Symposium. We recognise the special contribution these people make to the Symposium, and we are extremely grateful for this. This year, in return for their contribution, facilitators will receive an NZOIA product and a $100 gift voucher.

Free Range Assessments

Free Range Assessments are available for the following NZOIA assessments:

- All Leader qualifications

- All Endorsements – Sport Climbing Endorsement

- Climbing Wall Supervisor and Monitor Lead Climbing Endorsement

A Free Range Assessment is when the candidate/s liaise directly with a NZOIA Assessor. The candidate negotiates the fee (usually $375 plus/day and travel expenses), time and location with the assessor.  This provides the candidate with flexibility to have an assessment at a convenient time and place.  It can significantly reduce the costs of the candidate travelling to an NZOIA calendar assessment. The Free Range Assessment model is ideal for organisations wanting to get a number of staff qualified at the same time. It will also work for individuals and we suggest getting a few people together to sit the assessment with you – this contributes to a greater learning experience and will reduce the cost per person.

Each candidate pays NZOIA a fee of $150. This includes a new membership fee, registration fee, resources, assessor training and moderation costs, administration, certificates and membership cards. The Assessor may include the $150pp fee as part of their fees (they then pay this to NZOIA on your behalf), or you can pay the $150 fee separately – this is up to you and the assessor to decide how you wish to do this.

If you are already a member of NZOIA and are going to sit a Free Range Assessment, you still need to pay the $150 fee to NZOIA.

A list of our Assessors’ can be found on our website under the ‘Assessor Search’. Click on their name for further details.

Process

-        Decide what qualification you would like to sit (review the syllabus and assessment guide documents).

-        Decide on a date, and have a few back-up options in case that date doesn’t work for the assessor.

-        Contact an Assessor to negotiate date, location and fee. Ask whether they will include the $150 NZOIA candidate fee in their fees or whether they want you to pay it separately to NZOIA.

-        If required, contact NZOIA to request an invoice for the candidate fee/s

-        Join as an NZOIA member through the website

-        Sit the assessment
