    What is required to complete the application process:
     

    Senior Alpine Instructor Training

    This is a nine day course run by Outdoor Education New Zealand specifically designed for people who are wanting to lead people in the alpine environment. Suitable for those working towards NZOIA Alpine 2, or wanting to become trip leaders for clubs/social clubs where technical skills are being delivered.

    This is a “train the trainer” style course designed to look at key aspects that are important when leading others in this dynamic environment. 

    Prerequisites:

    Before attending this course, you must be competent walking in crampons, using an ice axe, able to self-arrest, have completed Avalanche Awareness and be working towards or completed Back Country Avalanche Awareness & be proficient with the skills outlined in the OENZ 5-day technical mountaineering course.

     

    Course Outline

    EONZ will endeavor to cover as many of the teachable skills below across the week. The focus will not be on the technical skill, but how to teach it. 

    Weather & avalanche forecast

    • Applying weather & avalanche forecasting to decision making.
    • NZ mountain weather
    • Dynamic avalanche management

    Teaching a range of snow anchors

    • Snow Stakes
    •  T-Slot
    • Vertical placements
    • Horizontal placement
    • Top clips
    • Snow Bollards

    Teaching Ropework

    • Knots for alpine climbing
    • Alpine rock protection & rock anchors
    • Snow Anchors & Runners
    • Pitching & belaying
    • Body Belays
    • Abseiling
    • Climbing in 2 & 3 person teams

    Teaching Glacier Travel

    • Roping up for glacier travel
    • Crevasse rescue
    • Simple and complex hall systems

    Leadership/instructional skills:

    • Plan and prepare 2 x multi-day educational and safe alpine experiences for model clients
    • Lead and manage a small group for 2 x 2 consecutive days in the alpine environment which may include a campout.
    • Apply effective safety management applicable to group, terrain and environmental conditions.
