    Senior Rock Instructor Training

    This is a nine day Instructor Training course ran by Outdoor Education New Zealand, specifically designed for people who wish to lead others in the multi-pitch rock climbing environment. Aimed at those working towards NZOIA Rock 2 or looking to become trip leaders for clubs and social groups.

     

    Prerequisites

    Before attending this course, you must be competent

    • Lead climbing on bolts and natural protection
    • Be proficient in the skills delivered on our 5-day trad course

    Safety

    • Climbing calls
    • Buddy checks
    • checking gear & equipment for damage
    • Assessing the safety of climbing routes

    • Fall factors

    Teaching Belaying

    • Trad belaying
      • Stance
      • positioning
    • Multi-pitch belaying
      • Redirecting an ATC
      • Belay plate in guide mode
    • Belaying with two ropes (half or twin ropes)

    Teaching Trad gear placement

    • Using natural protection
      • Trees
      • Boulders

    Teaching Anchor systems

    • Natural and placed protection anchors

     Advanced rope and rescue skills

    • Tying off a belay device
    • Prussic up a rope (self-rescue)

      • Drop loop/2:1 assisted rescue
      • Z-drag/ 5:1 unassisted rescue
    • Multi-pitch abseil descent with an injured climber

    Leadership/instructional skills:

    • Plan and prepare 2 x multi-day educational and safe rock experiences for model clients
    • Lead and manage a small group for 2 x 2 consecutive days in rock environment which may include a campout.
    • Apply effective safety management applicable to group, terrain and environmental conditions.
