    Excellence in Outdoor Leadership

Providing qualifications and training for New Zealand’s outdoor leaders
through an internationally recognised assessment and registration body since 1987.

    Excellence in Outdoor Leadership!

NZOIA is the qualification body for 9 outdoor disciplines. There are 3 levels to each qualification, which are recognised nationally as the industry standard.

NZOIA has developed outdoor instructing and guiding in New Zealand into a profession, through a commitment to training, standards, currency, and a code of conduct. Assessment, through formal peer review of instruction and guiding practices, has improved our way of working. We are responsible for promoting the highest standards of outdoor instruction and guiding, and striving to ensure that outdoor activity participants enjoy quality experiences.

    Free Range Assessments

Free Range Assessments are available for the following NZOIA assessments:

    - All Leader qualifications

    - All Endorsements – Sport Climbing Endorsement

    - Climbing Wall Supervisor and Monitor Lead Climbing Endorsement

A Free Range Assessment is when the candidate/s liaise directly with a NZOIA Assessor. The candidate negotiates the fee, time and location with the assessor.  This provides the candidate with flexibility to have an assessment at a convenient time and place.  It can significantly reduce the costs of the candidate travelling to an NZOIA calendar assessment. The Free Range Assessment model is ideal for organisations wanting to get a number of staff qualified at the same time. It will also work for individuals and we suggest getting a few people together to sit the assessment with you – this contributes to a greater learning experience and will reduce the cost per person.

Each candidate pays NZOIA a fee of $150. This includes a new membership fee, registration fee, resources, assessor training and moderation costs, administration, certificates and membership cards. The Assessor may include the $150pp fee as part of their fees (they then pay this to NZOIA on your behalf), or you can pay the $150 fee separately – this is up to you and the assessor to decide how you wish to do this.

If you are already a member of NZOIA and are going to sit a Free Range Assessment, you still need to pay the $150 fee to NZOIA.

A list of our Assessors’ can be found on our website under the ‘Assessor Search’. Click on their name for further details.

    -        Decide what qualification you would like to sit (review the syllabus and assessment guide documents).

    -        Decide on a date, and have a few back-up options in case that date doesn’t work for the assessor.

    -        Contact an Assessor to negotiate date, location and fee. Ask whether they will include the $150 NZOIA candidate fee in their fees or whether they want you to pay it separately to NZOIA.

    -        If required, contact NZOIA to request an invoice for the candidate fee/s

    -        Join as an NZOIA member through the website

    -        Sit the assessment
