    This qualification is for people who can lead mountain bike trips on trails up to and including MTBNZ Grade 2 within daylight hours. Multi-day or overnight trips will be serviced and staffed accommodation or campgrounds, with road access and reliable telecommunications.

    Mountain Bike 1

    This qualification is for people who can organise, instruct and guide participants in the mountain bike skills required for a positive experience on trails up to and including MTBNZ Grade 3. The NZOIA MTB 1 holder can teach intermediate mountain bike skills on MTBNZ Grade 3 or below terrain. Two-day assessment.

    Mountain Bike 2

    This qualification is for people who can organise, instruct and guide mountain bike trips and mountain bike skills sessions on trails up to and including MTBNZ Grade 5. Three-day assessment.

    Course Outlines | Whakamāramatanga o te akoranga

    On a NZOIA assessment there are a wide range of skills and knowledge that you will be tested on. Your Assessor will endeavour to ensure all areas in the syllabus are assessed. Below are outlines of what will likely be covered (depending on environmental conditions and other considerations at the time of the assessment) and how it relates to the syllabus.

    Read and be familiar with the:

    Leader Workbooks

    • Mountain Bike Leader Workbook
    • Core Knowledge Workbook (You only need to complete this once. If you already hold a Registered NZOIA Leader, 1 or 2 qualification you do not need to complete this workbook).

    It is optional for NZOIA Assessment Centre tertiary students to complete the workbooks as the content may be assessed as part of the tertiary course curriculum.  Please follow the requirements of your tutor/Assessor.

    • Section 1: Demonstrate knowledge, care and appropriate use of mountain bike equipment and clothing
    • Section 2: Demonstrate mountain bike care, maintenance and repairs
    • Section 5: Obtain a weather forecast and apply weather interpretation skills
    • Section 6: Role model and promote accepted environmental practices
    • Section 7: Lead and manage a group mountain biking

    Assignment - Scenario

    You will be given a scenario and asked to plan a one-day mountain bike trip based on the information given. This will include a trip plan with aims and objectives, how you would source weather and access information, hazard identity and contingencies.

    Applicable components from the NZOIA Mountain Bike 1 Syllabus:

    • Section 5: Demonstrate navigation skills
    • Section 6: Apply weather interpretation and forecasting skills
    • Section 8: Plan and prepare for a mountain bike day trip
    • Section 10: Apply effective safety management
