The holder of Alpine 2 may operate in terrain up to and including Mt Cook technical grade 2 and serious grade 3 on peaks less than 3000 meters. Trips are on easy glaciated terrain where travel is straight forward.
The holder can operate where avalanche hazard may be present, and options exist to reduce or eliminate exposure to risk.
The NZOIA Alpine 2 qualification is assessed in two parts:

Candidates must complete the Avalanche Assessment before progressing to the Personal and Instructional Skills assessment.
To gain the NZOIA Alpine 2 qualification you need to complete both parts of the assessment.
The Avalanche assessment is one full day.
